Insanity. I can barely keep my eyes open, but listen to this!
I have had FOUR friends/family members give birth in the past week. Isn't that insane?
Welcome to the world, baby Caroline, baby Noah, baby Laney and baby Gavin!
I'm not drinking the water!

Rite of Passage
Greetings from Chicago! It's been a wild 24 hours. Okay, well, wild by mom standards.
There are a few things that I kind of consider a rite of passage for a parent: pregnancy/labor/childbirth, first birthday, kindergarten (still not ready), dealing with the embarassing details your child leaks to the neighbors, and uncontrollable vomiting outside of the home.
The boys and I got home last night around 7, knowing that we had to do a week's worth of laundry, pack, and get ready to leave early this morning. I was up until 1:00 this morning doing laundry, and up again at 5:30 to shower and pull stuff out of the dryer. We got out the door by 7 (the goal was 6:30), and the boys were exhausted, of course. So, we're about 45 minutes into our trip and Evan doesn't look so good. He was tired, which I expected, but his face was flushed and he was looking really uncomfortable. I thought maybe it was because we were in the car and he didn't have any food in his stomach, so we stopped for some breakfast. He drank some water and ate a hash brown... and up it all came. We stopped four times in an hour to clean him up, then he finally went back to sleep. Like, we were two hours into the trip; what were we supposed to do? He slept for an hour and a half, and now he's totally back to his normal self. You'd never know he was sick. It was odd.
So, now Lauren is working some hip hop concert (yeah, Lauren) and we're laying low in the hotel for a while. We got checked in and gave Evan a bath. I didn't know what we were going to do today... now I'm thinking we're going to take naps and make sure everyone is feeling okay for a while. There are a few strip malls around here, but we don't really need anything. Who knows. Right now, Spongebob is holding us over. We still have seven hours left, of course. I'm a little leary of taking Evan to the pool.
Lauren called, and apparently all these famous artists are walking by and all the vendors are all excited and waving and getting autographs. He has no idea who any of them are.
I hope it gets better from here!!

supermom or superbad?
Last night, we had dinner at a reasonable hour, got baths, read books, and the boys were asleep in their own room (under mommy's homemade old sheet tent) by 9:00. I WAS supermom.
So, tonight, I've spent the whole evening angry. Ben hasn't had a nap, Lauren is in a mood, my mom is in a mood, and the boys are obnoxious (all three). Lauren chose 11:30 last night to bring up the new kindergarden dilemma - seriously, 11:30. We were two hours into a 2.5 hour movie, we paused to go to the bathroom or something, and he wants to talk school. I told him we'd talk about it today, and when I saw him for nearly the first time today at 7pm, his idea of the "discussion" was telling me what he had decided and what he was going to do... all this WITHOUT discussing it with me, or more importantly, Ben.
Here's the dilemma. Don't most schools start in the 7:30 to 8:00 range? There was an article in the paper about IPS the other day, and how the schools aren't starting this year until 9:30. My problem, as many other parents', is that I am expected to be at work at 8 am. My boss knows my situation and has been gracious enough to offer to work with me, but something tells me that my coming in between 10 and 10:30 every morning isn't his idea of flexible. Now, Lauren is self employed, and if any of you know him, he's usually around the house most of the day. He doesn't even finish reading the paper until probably 10 or so... so why couldn't he take Ben to school? Doesn't that sound logical to everyone else? His question (statement) last night was "What are you going to do about Ben? Quit your job?" Um, hello, no. There is a church next to the school that is going to do after school care, and we have discussed that already since I won't be back in Irvington until around 6 every night. So, in lieu of a conversation, he told me today that tomorrow he's going to the school to un-enroll Ben.
This infuriated me. I can't even begin to tell you how excited Ben is about school. He's excited that he's going at all, but also because it's two blocks away and he's familiar with the school and the neighborhood. And the coffee shop next door, which he thinks he'll be able to go to on recess. This is all he's talked about for the last year. You can't just tell him you're un-enrolling him because you're angry with the situation. There was no discussion, no asking our opinions, just knee-jerk reacting, at which he is an expert.
I know that once Lauren cools down, probably tomorrow, we'll get this figured out like a normal, calm, rational couple. I just wish we didn't have to go through the crap to get to it... every time.
Sorry, I just needed to vent.

not ready.

Ben starts school August 13.
I am NOT ready.
I thought I was ready! I really did! I'm not a sappy person who takes pictures of everything (okay, well not my kids) and cries at everything. I didn't cry when my kids were born. I never understood why these women get so emotional when their kids go off to kindergarten. Then, last night when I realized Ben goes to school, real school, in a month that I won't be in there to help him with things. He's going to have to figure things out on his own. My little baby is going to (probably) be the smallest, youngest kid in class, and I won't be there with him. I actually crawled in his bed with him last night and held him until I fell asleep. My little 33-lb boy who isn't even five yet will be on his own. I don't know if I can do this!
